One of the greatest fulfilments of a PCB manufacturer is to produce boards that dissipate heat properly.
A circuit board that dissipates heat effectively has a great potential to last longer than normal. And that’s what every PCB engineer wants to experience. That’s where the LED starboard comes in—a good example of a board with great heat dissipation property.
So, we’ll be talking about the LED star board—in this article.
Keep reading to find out.
What Is an LED Star Board?

In plain terms, an LED starboard, unlike a heat sink, is a heat-spreader that draws heat out from an LED module located in the center of the board.
And an LED starboard usually has two pad terminals. One pad is an anode (+) and the other is a cathode (-).
Technically, an LED star board has a large surface area for thermal connection linking the heat-sink. As a result, it makes the LED starboard system’s mechanical design easy and efficient to operate.
LED Starboard Features

1. Firstly, the LED starboard provides the flexibility required for creating lamps and other types of luminaries.
2. Then, at 700mA, the LED starboard gets binned and tested, making it easier to create more energy easily.
3. And it has a current pulse duration of 20ms and its thermal pads are stable at 25oC temperature.
5. Besides, LED starboard comes with a 1000mA forward DC system and a 1200mA forward pulsed current at peak.
6. Finally, it comes with CRI and CCT combinations that support various applications.
LEDs Mounted on Star Board
Generally, mounted LEDs on starboards help to boost heat dissipation. And it’s all thanks to its super thermal pad technology combined with the Star LED board; its heat dissipation feature is effective.
But that’s not all.
LMB (LED Mounting Bases) usually offers the widest range of MCPCB electronic boards for LEDs.
Also, the STAR MCPCB is the first MCPCB to gain from the super thermal pad technology.
So, with the STAR MCPCB, LED producers can drive their board to a higher power than the conventional boards. At the same time, they maintain a reasonable junction temperature. Apparently, with a higher flux, the LED numbers decrease in a system.
LED StarBoard Dimensions
The dimension of the LED starboard base layer is 1~1.6mm. On the other hand, the Dielectric chemistry and copper circuit layers are 75 – 100μm and 2oz, respectively.
So, here’s a table showing different LED start board material grades and their dimensions.
Material Grade | Dielectric Thickness (Dimension) | Thermal Conductivity |
T-Lam 1ka 04 | 100 μm | 3 W/mK |
MP 03 | 75 μm | 1.3 W/mK |
K1-Z | 80 μm | 2 W/mK |
NRA-8 | 80 μm | 1.8 W/mK |
VT-4A1 | 75 μm | 1.3 W/mK |
