LED Strip Channel: The Definitive Guide

FACTS CHECKED BY  Bob Smith

An Led strip channel is usually in the form of aluminum. Plus, it’s one of the most critical parts of LED fixtures. Hence, it’s the perfect housing for any LED strip.

But that’s not all.

It’s an excellent accessory for LED lighting.

So, whether you’re an engineer or designer, you need the LED light strip channel to amplify your LED brightness.

It’s also important to note that LED strip channels and diffusers enhance LED heat dissipation.

Hence, the LED strip channel is something to consider when designing or installing LED lights.

And that’s why we’ve created this article—to give you an in-depth view of the LED strip channel.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in.

What Is an LED Strip Channel?

LED Strip Channel

Also known as Aluminum extrusions/channels, the LED strip channel is responsible for housing the LED. Specifically, the channel makes the LED strip light look and work like the old light fixture.

But there’s more.

The LED strip light aluminum channel is a clear casing—made with extruded aluminum. Hence, it has a long and narrow structure. Interestingly, this feature is SUPER IDEAL for linear lighting.

Typically, the channels take a “U” shape—with an estimated half-inch wide slot suitable for mounting.

Also, the channel usually comes in 1 meter (3.2Ft). You can buy it in packs of 5 channels, making its LED strip length 5 meters (16.4Ft).

Apart from the LED strip channel, there’s the polycarbonate diffuser. Some manufacturers include plastic diffusers with channels.

But that’s not all.

These manufacturers produce polycarbonates through an extrusion process.

Plus, producers design the polycarbonates to have a simple snapping mechanism. That way, it’s possible for the diffuser to fit the LED strip channel easily.

Typically, the diffuser sits in place when it’s at least a quarter-inch from the LED strip lights. And they help to distribute the LED strip light effectively.

How to Choose an LED Channel?

When it comes to the LED channel, you should consider a few things before choosing one. And they are as follows;

1. Shape

It’s best to be sure about the shape you plan to get. We have U-shaped or V-shaped LED channels—the most common shapes.

The U-shaped channel is ideal for surface mounting projects. The V-shaped channel, on the other hand, is perfect for corner-based applications.

We also have the double-row channel—wider than the U-shaped LED channel. Plus, the double-row channel helps you install two LED strips—especially if you want more brightness.

2. Height and Width

Regarding height and width, you need to consider the size of the LED strips. Hence, you must ensure the channel’s inner space is apt for the LED strips.

We recommend you go for LED channels suitable for all the 3528 and 5050 strips.

Likewise, it would help if you considered choosing U102 with additional width for the light strip plus 2nd. However, waterproof LED strips require only U103 with extra height and width.

Also, we advise that you choose more extended LED channel versions if you don’t like too many connections.

Nonetheless, you can go for the U104, a bendable LED channel. And it’s most suitable for irregular corners and columns. Typically, manufacturers make the U104 with special aluminum alloy—perfect for additional softness.

3. Color

There are a ton of color variations in the market. So, you can choose your preferred color—based on the targeted environment.

Aluminum Channel Applications

  • Indirect Lighting
  • Narrow-Beam Optic
  • Wall Grazing
  • Surface lighting
  • Decorative lighting
  • Recessed lighting
  • Sample chain
  • Artwork and Signboard
  • Stair lighting
  • Wall-wash lighting

LED Strip Channel Diffuser

LED Strip Channel Diffuser

The LED strip channel diffuser does a great job in light distribution for LED lighting. Furthermore, they help to make the LED lighting soft to the eyes—while dissipating heat.

How to Install LED Strip Light Aluminum Channel

Here are straightforward steps on how to install an LED strip light channel:

1. First, install the extension connectors and mounting clamps.

2. Then, press the aluminum in the recently installed mounting clamps. Also, you can install corner connectors (but this applies if you have corners). To fix the corners properly, you can use a piece of double-sided adhesive. Afterward, you can press the corner channel at the corner.

3. The next thing is to measure the LED strip—after which you can cut at the indicated position. At corners, you can connect two different strips with a strip corner connector by soldering them together.

4. Testing the LED strip is what you should do next. If the strip works, you can go ahead with the installation.

5. Enlarge the hole on each end cap according to the LED power cables.

6. Peel off the adhesive paper and place the LED light strip inside the LED channel. Afterward, install the diffuser above the LED light strip. And you can do this by pushing it into the slot.

7. To get a more moisture-proof and durable finish, place some adhesive at the hole where the power cable extends out.
