Electronic and electrical engineers work literally at the forefront of practical technology, improving the systems and devices we use daily. From mobile phones to automobiles to solar energy, among others, innovation is a necessity to meet society’s tech, communication, and energy needs, among others. So, in this article, you’re going to learn the importance of voltage regulators, precisely the LM323 regulator, along with its current applications. From here, expect to find much about LM323 electronic knowledge.

LM323 Pin Configuration

Firstly, as a linear voltage regulator, the LM323 is a 3-terminal positive voltage regulator that comes with a preset 5V output. It also comes with a load-driving capability of 3 A. Here, new circuit design and processing techniques are used to provide high output current without sacrificing the regulation of lower current devices.

Also, in electronics, you may come across a pinout. It is a cross-reference between the pins, or contacts, of an electronic component or an electrical connector and their functions. At this point, we will look at how to configure an LM323 pin.

Pin Number Pin NameDescription
1The input voltage pinThe pin under which input current passes through the system
2Ground pin. This pin is connected to the ground of the device
3Output voltage pin. This pin is under which the current-voltage leaves the device.

Characteristics of LM323

The LM323 regulator has several characteristics worth noting.

  • Output Voltage: 5V (Fixed)
  • Positive Voltage Regulator
  • Input Voltage: 7.2V to 20V
  • Output Current: 3A
  • Voltage Tolerance: 2%
  • Maximum Output Current: 15A (With Series Pass transistor)
  • The operating junction temperature is 125°C (maximum)
  • Found in To-220 and metal can package

LM323 Equivalents

The most notable alternatives are LM317 and LM7805. They include the following:

The LM317 device is a 3-terminal adjustable positive-voltage regulator. It can supply more than 1.5 A over an output-voltage range of 1.25 V to 37 V.

The LM7805, on the other hand, finds heavy usage in almost all electronic projects because it offers a constant +5V output voltage for a variable input voltage supply.

How to Use LM323

All you need to do is connect to the input filter capacitor. The value needs to be 0.33uF or higher than an output filter capacitor of 0.1uF or more, depending on the output current.

Consequently, you’ll get +5V regulators on the output pin, and you need to remember that the minimum input voltage needs to be 7.5V minimum.

Besides the fixed voltage regulator, the LM323 can act as a constant load current provider source when one uses it as a resistor. It can also act as a variable voltage regulator when one uses it with an Op-Amp, making it highly suitable in plenty of applications.

Conclusion

LM323 voltage regulators are some of the most critical components in electronics. They have plenty of characteristics and equivalents. More importantly, they are straightforward to use. So, it could be hard to keep or maintain voltages within the prescribed range that a piece of electronic equipment can tolerate without them.
