Our Single Sided PCB Manufacturing Capabilities

WellPCB’s single sided printed circuit board manufacturing combines precision routing, controlled impedance options, and extensive testing services. We support projects from initial prototype through high volume PCB assembly with lead times starting at 1 week.

Our single sided PCB boards use FR4 standard, high Tg FR4, halogen free materials meeting UL requirements. Standard FR4 provides Tg values of 130 to 140°C, while high Tg variants achieve 170 to 180°C performance.

PCB board thickness spans from 0.2mm to 6.0mm with ±10% tolerance.

The PCB manufacturing process maintains excellent substrate dimensional stability with warp and twist specifications of ≤0.7%, X/Y shrinkage <0.05%, and moisture absorption <0.15% according to IPC standards.

Single sided PCBs incorporate base copper thickness from 0.5 oz (17.5 μm) to 5 oz (175 μm), with heavy copper PCB options extending up to 20 oz (700 μm) for power supply and high-current applications.

The copper foil etching has undercut ratios of 1:1 to 1.5:1 depending on thickness requirements.

Our single layer boards maintain finished copper thickness tolerance of ±10% across the conductive layer, with surface roughness Ra ≤2.0 μm. This is verified through cross-sectional analysis and four-point probe measurements according to IPC-A-650 test methods.

Surface finishes for single sided circuit boards include lead free HASL (thickness 1 to 40 μm), immersion gold (Au: 0.05 to 0.2 μm over Ni: 3 to 6 μm), OSP (0.2 to 0.5 μm), immersion tin (≥1.0 μm), and immersion silver (0.12 to 0.40 μm).

Each finish maintains specific shelf life: HASL (12 months), ENIG (12 months), OSP (6 months), ImSn (6 months), and ImAg (12 months).

Solder mask options include LPI types with thickness control of 15 to 30 μm over traces and 8 to 15 μm over laminate.
Coverage achieves 7.5 μm minimum on trace edges per IPC-SM-840 Class T.

Silkscreen legend printing resolution achieves 0.15mm line width in white, yellow or black ink on single sided PCB boards.

Minimum line width and spacing achieve 3 mil (0.075mm) with impedance control ±10% for 50Ω traces on high quality single sided printed circuit patterns.

Controlled impedance structures support 50Ω ±5 Ω for single ended traces using 1 oz copper on 0.8 mm FR4 with Er=4.2 to 4.5.

Edge clearance specifications maintain a 0.3 mm minimum distance from the board outline to copper features per IPC requirements.

Mechanical drilling for single sided PCBs achieves a minimum finished hole size of 0.15mm (6 mil) for thickness ≤1.6mm, 0.2mm (8 mil) for thickness ≤2.5mm with a standard tolerance of ±0.1mm.

Maximum drill size reaches 6.3mm with positional accuracy ±0.075mm. Hole aspect ratios support up to 12:1 for reliable plating in single conducting layer designs.

Non-plated through hole (NPTH) tolerance maintains ±0.1mm precision, with specialized capabilities for press-fit applications requiring tighter tolerances.

PCB production scales from single prototype boards to 100,000+ unit volumes. Our single sided PCB manufacturer equipment includes 6 CNC routing machines with 600,000 holes/hour capacity.

Batch tracking maintains lot traceability through all processes. Statistical process control monitors Cpk ≥1.33 for critical dimensions, supporting consistent quality for high volume single sided PCB board manufacturing.

Each single sided printed circuit board undergoes 100% automated optical inspection, electrical testing via flying probe, or dedicated bed-of-nails fixtures.

Testing includes ionic contamination verification, microsection analysis for copper thickness verification, and peel strength testing.

Our ISO 9001:2008, IATF 16949:2009, and UL certified facilities follow IPC standards for assembly operations.

What Exactly is a Single Sided PCB?

A single sided PCB (sometimes called a single layer board or 1-layer circuit board) has just one layer of copper on top of an insulating base material like FR4, aluminum, or polyimide. It’s a cost-effective option for simpler circuit designs, as all circuit traces, pads and electronic components are placed on one side of the board, with no internal layers or opposite-side routing.

Because there’s only one conductive layer, these boards are easy to design, low cost, and best suited for low density designs including lighting modules, power supplies, and control units. The board structure typically consists of a copper layer, solder mask, and silkscreen, laminated onto a single insulating base.

How Do Single Sided PCBs Work?

Single sided PCBs operate by guiding electrical current through copper traces etched in fixed routing patterns. These traces are formed from a copper foil layer laminated to a non-conductive substrate, creating one layer of conductive material that interconnects components as defined by the circuit design.

Signal Processing Functions:

The copper network enables the following functions within single sided printed circuits:

  • Signal amplification: Raises voltage or current levels for output strength
  • Signal filtering: Removes unwanted frequencies or electrical noise
  • Signal modulation: Encodes data onto carrier signals for transmission
  • Power distribution: Delivers voltage and current to each electronic load
  • Signal switching: Opens or closes pathways in digital logic operations

Component Integration

Electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and ICs are soldered directly onto copper pads. The substrate offers structural support, while copper traces on the single side of the PCB provide all required electrical connections.

Isolation and Protection

The solder mask layer prevents shorts by insulating adjacent copper features. Solderable pad areas remain exposed to allow component mounting. This ensures stable circuit behavior in varying environmental and operational conditions.

What Materials Do Single Sided PCBs Usually Consist Of?

Single sided PCB boards use a combination of base laminates, conductive foils, coatings, and solderable finishes. The selection depends on mechanical requirements, thermal conditions, and application specific needs.

PCB MaterialFunction in Single Sided PCBTypical Applications
FR4 SubstrateRigid glass reinforced epoxy laminate; electrically insulating with stable thermal performance.General purpose single sided PCB boards, consumer electronics.
Aluminum SubstrateProvides integrated heat sinking for thermal management.LED drivers, power supplies, and high heat environments.

Solder MaskProtective layer preventing shorts between copper features while exposing pads for soldering.Every single sided printed circuit board, regardless of application.
Silkscreen LayerPrinted reference markings for assembly alignment and component ID.Visual aid in manual and automated assembly.
Surface Finish (HASL, OSP)Protects copper from oxidation and ensures solderability at pad sites. All production volumes; are selected based on cost and finish type.

When Should You Use a Single Sided PCB?

Single sided PCB boards are preferred in applications where simple routing, cost efficiency, and limited component density meet the project requirements. Their construction supports dependable manufacturing for designs that don’t require inter-layer connectivity or advanced signal isolation.

    Single Sided PCB Manufacturer FAQs

WellPCB single sided PCB manufacturer offers single sided PCBs with copper thickness options from 0.5 oz to 5 oz.

Standard production typically uses 1 oz or 2 oz copper for balanced conductivity and solderability. For power supply and automotive applications, heavy copper PCBs up to 20 oz can be fabricated using specialized press and etching processes.

In most cases, single sided PCB boards are not recommended for high frequency designs requiring controlled impedance, shielding, or signal layer isolation.

But, for low frequency analog, power distribution, or LED lighting circuits, they offer a reliable and cost effective PCB solution.

Available finishes include lead-free HASL, OSP, immersion tin, and immersion silver, each with specific strengths in terms of cost, flatness, and thermal durability. Selection depends on volume, environmental requirements and whether RoHS-compliant or lead free assembly is needed.

Yes, WellPCB supports panelized fabrication of single sided PCBs to enable gang-run builds and automated assembly. Panel files provided by the customer are reviewed during the DRC verification process to confirm suitability for manufacturing.

Single sided PCBs manage heat through proper substrate choice and copper thickness. For high power circuits like LED drivers or power supplies, aluminum substrates with dielectric insulation help dissipate heat.

Wider traces support higher current, and thermal loads should be spaced across the board. Solder mask color affects emissivity. Without inner layers, thermal vias are not possible, so passive cooling or external heat sinks may be necessary for continuous high-power use.
